Dedicated and safe cycle lanes
BREEAM UK New Construction, Non-domestic Buildings (United Kingdom), Technical Manual, SD5078: BREEAM UK New Construction 2018 3.0, published by BRE Global Limited, suggests that dedicated and safe cycle lanes are:
Marked-out and clearly signed routes to accommodate building users arriving on and travelling through the assessed site on a bicycle. They must also have the following features:
- Adequate external lighting in accordance with BS 5489-1:2013 Lighting of roads and public amenity areas.
- Appropriate sized, designed and constructed. The following publications offer guidance on how to demonstrate this:
- a) Local transport Note 2/08 Cycle infrastructure design, Department of Transport, 2008
- b) Sustrans design guidance (http://www.sustrans.org.uk), specifically the Sustrans design manual handbook for cycle-friendly design.
